Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) rises over a caldera holding the crescent lake of Segara Anak and the young cone of Gunung Barujari. From Sembalun the trail crosses open savannah before a steep final climb to the Plawangan Sembalun rim at about 2,640 metres. Your private guide and porters set up camp with proper tents and a camp chef, so the evening is for the sunset and the morning for first light over the crater.

The national park is usually closed to trekking from January to March.
Good fitness and prior hiking experience are required; the climb gains around 1,500 metres.
Nights at the rim drop to 5–10°C; bring warm layers, a hat and gloves.
A recent health certificate and insurance are required at registration.
Permits are booked in advance through the park's eRinjani system.
A night in Sembalun before the trek is recommended.
