For a first trip, most guests split their stay between the coast and Ubud: two to four nights in the south (Uluwatu, Seminyak or Nusa Dua) and three to five nights in Ubud. Bali is small on a map but slow to cross, so where you sleep decides how much of the island you see each day.

Uluwatu: cliffs and sunsets
Limestone cliffs, hidden beaches such as Padang Padang and Bingin, and some of the island's most exclusive resorts. Evenings belong to the Kecak dance at Uluwatu temple and clifftop dinners.
Seminyak and Canggu: food and the beach
Seminyak has designer boutiques, contemporary restaurants and sunset beach clubs. Canggu, further up the coast, is more relaxed: surf breaks at Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, creative cafés and rice-field walks. Traffic between the two is heavy in the evening, so stay where you plan to spend your nights.
Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Sanur: easy and family-friendly
Nusa Dua has manicured beaches and calm water for swimming. Jimbaran is close to the airport and known for seafood dinners on the sand. Sanur has a long beachfront path, sheltered water and the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.
Ubud: the cultural heart
Galleries, the palace and art market, the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Tirta Empul water temple and jungle retreats with valley views. Ubud is inland, so plan your beach days elsewhere.
How to split a week or ten days
- Seven nights: three in Uluwatu or Seminyak, four in Ubud.
- Ten nights: three in the south, four in Ubud, three in Sidemen or Nusa Dua.
- With small children: Nusa Dua or Sanur for calm water, with day trips inland.
